Fabric Crayons are the perfect design tool for creating special gifts or unique quilt blocks. During the 1930's, crayon tinted designs were very popular on table linens, kitchen towels and baby quilts. Today's approach is much easier and still very popular. Whether you are preserving a child's artwork or reproducing a retro style of embellishment, you will find that the Fabric Crayons are fun and will produce delightful results. Each package of the Fabric Crayons consists of 8 brilliant colors for drawing and coloring on paper then transferring permanently to synthetic fabrics. We have enclosed a few tips for using the crayons to achieve the best results.
- Choose simple designs and copy them on a clean white piece of paper.
- The color will transfer lighter; however, the crayons will produce a grainy appearance if too much pressure is used. Darken the design by applying multiple layers of color.
- When coloring large areas, color in a crosshatched motion in order to layer the color evenly. This will also create a textured effect, Figure A.
- Use shading to create depth in your design.
- Lightly dust the paper when coloring is complete in order to brush away any specks of crayon that you do not want to transfer.
- Before transferring the design, make sure the fabric is well pressed and free of any creases or wrinkles.
- The transfer works best on synthetic fabrics or a synthetic blend. 100% cotton fabric will not produce a permanent design.
- You can enhance your colored design by outlining it with a permanent fabric marker or using an outline embroidery stitch.
