By Amy SummersMake this easy travel size pillow cover using an original drawing and a novelty fabric. This is a great beginner project or a quick gift for that special traveler. An original pillowcase is a wonderful souvenir for a special sleepover or comfort for an uneasy camper.

Materials List  

1/2 yd. - 100% polyester fabric (18" x wnidth of fabric0)
1/4 yd. - complementary fabric for pillowcase cuff (9" x width of fabric)
Fabric Crayons

Elephant pattern (PDF, 16K) or simple design of your choosing
Iron and pressing surface
Sewing Machine


Instructions  
1. Print Elephant pattern (PDF, 16K) or choose a simple design of your choice. Color using Fabric Crayons following the package instructions, Figure A. (See Fabric Crayon tips) Set aside.

 

2. Pre-wash fabric and machine dry. Press to remove any wrinkles and creases.

 

3. Cut pillowcase fabric 18" x 33" and cuff fabric 9" x 33".

 

4. Stitch pillowcase fabric to cuff fabric along the 33" side, right sides together. Press seam toward cuff.

 

5. Fold with right sides together, meeting long sides. Making sure cuff seams align and pin in place, Figure B.

 

6. Starting at cuff edge, stitch using ½" seam allowance. Stitch along one long side and along end to folded edge. Serge or zigzag finish seams.

 

7. To finish pillowcase cuff, press a ½" hem to wrong side along raw edge of cuff. Fold in half to wrong side meeting the inside seam line.Stitch in the ditch or hand sew hem along seam line to finish cuff.

 

8. Turn pillowcase to right side and press.

 

9. With fold edge along top and seam edge on bottom, center the colored design on pillowcase and transfer following the package instructions (Figure C -- Be sure to place several layers of paper on the inside of pillowcase to prevent the design from bleeding through).

 

10. Highlight design using permanent markers to define detail areas.

 

11. Personalize with monogram or name if desired.

 

TIP: Launder pillowcase in cool water on gentle cycle. Line dry for best results.
